Red-shouldered Hawks
Speciation in the Red-shouldered and Ridgway's Hawk complex
This project investigates the taxonomic relationship within the Buteo lineatus-ridgwayi complex, specifically investigating whether the western subspecies, B. l. elegans, warrants species-level recognition. Using an integrative approach, this research combines genetic, plumage, vocalization, and behavioral data across the five recognized subspecies, while also incorporating the Ridgway’s Hawk as a comparative sister taxon.
Field-based vocal playback trials will be conducted across multiple locations in the United States and the Dominican Republic to examine behavioral responses among subspecies. Vocal recordings will be analyzed using RavenPro software to assess variation in vocal parameters. Low-coverage whole-genome sequencing will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Bryce Robinson at Cornell University to assess patterns of genetic divergence and potential gene flow within the complex. Plumage variation will be compared through qualitative evidence gathered from both current and historical scientific literature.
